This conference aims to explore the nature of atmospheres and how they can be understood. Through this exploration, we will reconsider the perception of atmospheres, the cognition of situated, relational, and expressive properties of objects, bodily movement through space, and the sensorimotor and technological dimensions of ambiances. Special attention will be given to the relationship between atmospheres, the arts, and the environment. Potential topics of interest include:
The metaphysics, perception, and aesthetics of atmospheres
The role of atmospheres in the arts
The emotional dimension of atmospheres
Empathy as a tool for grasping atmospheres
How atmospheres contribute to the representation of places, affective tonalities, site-specific Stimmungen, spatialized or mind-dependent feelings, and mood-influenced situations
The relationship between atmospheres, appreciability, and affordances
Atmospheres and environmental thinking

Submissions
Please submit proposals and a short biography via email to Stefano Ercolino (stefano.ercolino@unive.it) and Cecilia Rofena (cecilia.rofena@unive.it) with the subject line: “ATMOS Conference - Abstract Proposal.” Abstracts should not exceed 500 words (references excluded), and presentations will last 40 minutes. The submission deadline is April 22, 2025. Speakers will be notified of the decisions by May 13, 2025.
